Purchasing your website domain (address) requires careful thought and
planning. It is often hard to find your business name available as a
domain name.
Tips for coming up with a name
- It is key to keep the name as short as possible.
- The name must make someone think of your business.
- The name must be memorable.
- It must be easily understood when spoken over the phone.
- Be careful with letters that are easily confused e.g. b, v, d if your domain name must be spelled out to the listener.
- It must fit on your business card.
- Your email addresses combined with your domain name must not be excessively long (under 26 characters).
TLD
TLD stand for top level domain. In laymen terms, this means .com or .org or .net etc.
The TLD communicates a message to the visitor as well as the domain name. Often one is well advised to purchase multiple TLD's.
Nameservers and Hosting
You will need to contract with a company to host your website on their
server. They need to provide you two nameserver addresses. This looks
something like ns1.tratx.com and ns2.tratx.com
Term of license
Names typically cost $9 per year.
If you forget to renew your name at
the end of the year your website will be down and often a porn site
will pop up on your previous business site. There is nothing you can do
about this. Be safe; buy a 10 year license.
