Shopping carts, security certificates, credit card merchant accounts, order forms....
Whew, this can be quite an exhaustive topic. We don't want to attempt
to be 'everything for everybody'. Therefore, we have narrowly defined
the types of eCommerce we'll tackle.
eCommerce Levels:
Single product or service with a defined price
Less than 12 products or service price points
More than 12 products or products with multiple options and price points. Max of 50.
Methods of customer payment:
Credit and Debit cards are the currency of the internet. You will need
a merchant account to accept these. Paypal.com is often the best way to
start for a business without a merchant account and a limited number of
products.
Your merchant account and website must have a secure shopping cart
or order form. Many merchant accounts provide the use of their shopping
cart for free but you will need to pay the designer to configure it.
Shopping cart and order forms:
Single order forms only require scripting of an order form and the
purchase and installation of a Security Certificate *. The typical cost
for a single product order form will run $200-300 (including the
security certificate).
* Security certificates cost $50-100 per year for the license and an installation fee by the hosting company est. $50
Paypal.com is an ideal way to start with a small number of products.
There is no setup fee and you only pay discount fees IF/WHEN anyone
purchases anything. The criticism of this method is that some people
don't want to use paypal. This is often not a major hurdle if your
budget requires you to keep your website design costs restrained.
If your merchant account provider does not have a shopping cart you
must buy the software and pay the designer to configure it. The
software often costs $100-300 and it can take 4-6 hours to configure
and populate it. Your total cost for a custom shopping cart range from
$500-1500.
You will monthly fees and per sale fees from your merchant account
provider. Typically they are $100 setup, $25/month fee, $10 statement
fee, and 1.5% - 2.5% discount fee, plus a per sale charge of 0.20.
